Overview

The Abalone Nerite / Limpet Nerite (Septaria porcellana) is a limpet-like nerite that adheres tightly to surfaces. A specialised surface grazer that does best in mature aquariums with abundant natural biofilm.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 22–28Β°C (72–82Β°F)
  • pH: 7.0–8.5
  • Hardness: 8–20 dGH (need minerals for shell health)

Tank Setup

  • Minimum tank size: 30 litres for a few
  • Substrate: Any; they adhere to surfaces
  • Decor: Rocks, driftwood, glass; they graze on all hard surfaces

Diet

  • Base: Natural algae and biofilm β€” they are constant grazers
  • Treats: Algae wafers, blanched vegetables if algae is scarce

Temperament & Tank Mates

  • Temperament: Peaceful; entirely dedicated to grazing
  • Best companions: All peaceful community fish; other snails; shrimp
  • Note: Protect from snail-eating fish (loaches, puffers)

Breeding

  • Difficulty: Very difficult; larvae may require brackish conditions

Common Issues

  • Excellent algae grazers β€” thrive in mature aquariums
  • May not survive in new tanks without established algae
  • Shell erosion possible in soft or acidic water
  • Lifespan: 2–5 years
