Beginner Aquarium Plants
The hardiest plants for beginners — no CO₂ required.
Why Live Plants?
They improve water quality, produce oxygen, reduce algae, provide hiding spots, and look beautiful. Many are incredibly easy to grow.
Top 10 Beginner Plants
1. Java Fern
Grows on driftwood/rocks (don't bury rhizome!). Tolerates low light, no CO₂, neglect. Multiple varieties available.
2. Anubias
Slow-growing, extremely hardy. Grows on hardscape. Broad leaves — bettas love resting on them.
3. Java Moss
Grows on anything. Nearly impossible to kill. Great for shrimp tanks as breeding ground.
4. Amazon Sword
Large rosette centerpiece. 30-50 cm tall. Needs root tabs or nutrient substrate.
5. Vallisneria

6. Cryptocoryne
Beautiful low-growing rosettes. May "melt" when first planted — don't panic, they regrow.
7. Floating Plants
Frogbit, Salvinia, Duckweed. Absorb excess nitrates, provide shade. Easiest of all.
8. Water Wisteria
Fast-growing stem plant. Absorbs excess nutrients. Easy to propagate.
9. Bolbitis Fern
Like java fern but finer leaves. Attaches to hardscape. Grows slowly but hardy.
10. Marimo Moss Ball
Not actually moss —球形 algae. Requires almost no care. Shrimp love them.
Planting Tips
- Root tabs: Push into substrate near swords/crypts every 3 months
- Liquid fertilizer: Dose weekly for stem plants
- Lighting: 8-10 hours/day, use a timer
Pro Tip: Start with java fern, anubias, and java moss on driftwood. They're virtually indestructible and give a natural look from day one.
