Overview

Apistogramma agassizii is a popular dwarf cichlid from the Amazon, available in many selectively bred colour strains (Double Red, Gold Fire, etc.). Males are colourful and territorial; females are smaller and more subdued. They appreciate warm, soft, acidic water and structured territory.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 22–28Β°C (72–82Β°F)
  • pH: 4.5–6.5 (prefers acidic)
  • Hardness: 1–8 dGH (soft water preferred)

Tank Setup

  • Minimum tank size: 55 litres for a pair
  • Substrate: Fine sand (they sift substrate)
  • Decor: Leaf litter, caves, driftwood, dense planting; visual barriers to break sightlines

Diet

  • Base: Quality micro pellets, granules
  • Treats: Frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, micro worms, daphnia

Temperament & Tank Mates

  • Temperament: Territorial dwarf cichlid; males are aggressive around breeding
  • Best companions: Small tetras (Cardinal, Ember), corydoras, dwarf shrimp (with caution), otocinclus
  • Avoid: Aggressive fish, very small shrimp (may be eaten)

Breeding

  • Difficulty: Moderate; cave spawner
  • Process: Female selects a cave; lays eggs; guards aggressively; male may help guard
  • Fry: Free-swimming after 3–4 days; require micro worms, infusoria

Common Issues

  • Males may harass females β€” provide visual barriers
  • Soft, acidic water essential for health and breeding
  • Prone to hexamita in poor water quality
  • Lifespan: 3–5 years
