Overview
Neocaridina davidi dwarf shrimp are the most popular and beginner-friendly aquarium shrimp, available in many colour strains (Red Cherry, Blue Dream, Orange, Yellow, Bloody Mary, etc.). They are prolific breeders, hardy, and actively graze on algae and biofilm.
Water Parameters
- Temperature: 18β26Β°C (64β79Β°F); very adaptable
- pH: 6.5β8.0
- Hardness: 6β15 dGH (need adequate minerals for molting)
- Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm β sensitive to copper and pesticides
Tank Setup
- Minimum tank size: 10 litres for a colony (larger is more stable)
- Substrate: Any; dark substrate enhances colour
- Decor: Mosses, driftwood, plants; hiding spots essential for molting and breeding
- Note: They breed readily β population can explode
Diet
- Base: They graze on natural algae and biofilm β supplemental food needed
- Treats: Blanched vegetables, shrimp-specific foods, spirulina wafers
- Note: They need adequate calcium for molting
Temperament & Tank Mates
- Temperament: Peaceful, active scavengers
- Best companions: Small tetras (Ember, Neon), rasboras, corydoras, snails, dwarf gouramis
- Avoid: Large fish (they are food), bettas (sometimes eat shrimp), loaches, crayfish
Breeding
- Difficulty: Very easy β they breed constantly
- Process: Females carry eggs under their abdomen for 2β3 weeks; then release free-swimming shrimplets
- Note: Keep single colour strain to maintain colour purity
Common Issues
- Copper is lethal β avoid medications, fertilizers containing copper
- Molting issues β ensure adequate GH (minerals)
- Sudden water changes can cause mass die-offs β drip acclimate new additions
- Population can explode β sell or trade excess shrimp
- Crossbreeding with other Neocaridina strains dilutes colour β keep one colour only
- Lifespan: 1β2 years
