Overview

The Amano Shrimp (Caridina multidentata) is the gold standard algae-eating shrimp. Named after aquascaping legend Takashi Amano, they are prolific algae grazers that eat hair algae, diatoms, and biofilm. Cannot breed in freshwater β€” larvae require brackish conditions.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 20–26Β°C (68–79Β°F)
  • pH: 6.5–7.5
  • Hardness: 6–12 dGH (need adequate minerals for molting)
  • Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm β€” very sensitive

Tank Setup

  • Minimum tank size: 20 litres for 5+
  • Substrate: Any; they graze on all surfaces
  • Decor: Driftwood, rocks, plants; they hide during molting
  • Note: They are active scavengers and will eat almost anything

Diet

  • Base: They graze on natural algae and biofilm β€” supplemental food needed
  • Treats: Algae wafers, blanched vegetables, shrimp-specific foods
  • Note: They need adequate calcium for molting β€” supplement if needed

Temperament & Tank Mates

  • Temperament: Peaceful, active scavengers
  • Best companions: All peaceful community fish; small tetras, rasboras, corydoras, snails
  • Avoid: Large fish that may eat them β€” loaches, cichlids, bettas (sometimes)

Breeding

  • Difficulty: Impossible in freshwater β€” larvae require brackish water
  • Note: They will breed (females carry eggs) but larvae cannot develop in freshwater

Common Issues

  • Molting issues β€” ensure adequate GH (minerals) in water
  • Copper is lethal β€” avoid medications containing copper
  • Sensitive to water changes β€” drip acclimate
  • One of the best algae eaters in the hobby
  • Lifespan: 2–3 years
