Overview

The Denison Barb / Red Line Torpedo Barb (Sahyadria denisonii) is a fast, torpedo-shaped schooling barb from India with a distinctive red lateral stripe and black markings. A premium species that needs a large, well-maintained aquarium.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 18–25Β°C (64–77Β°F); prefers cooler, well-oxygenated water
  • pH: 6.5–7.5
  • Hardness: 8–15 dGH
  • Note: Very sensitive to poor water quality

Tank Setup

  • Minimum tank size: 250 litres for 6+
  • Substrate: Rounded gravel or sand (they are active and may injure themselves on sharp substrate)
  • Decor: Open swimming space essential; they are powerful, fast swimmers
  • Flow: Moderate to strong; they appreciate current

Diet

  • Base: Quality flake, sinking pellets
  • Treats: Frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, blanched vegetables, algae wafers
  • Note: Varied diet essential for colour and health

Temperament & Tank Mates

  • Best companions: Other large, peaceful fish β€” rainbowfish, larger tetras, gouramis
