Red Spotted Severum Small / Mid-size

Overview

The Severum (Heros efasciatus) is a relatively peaceful large cichlid with a disc-shaped body similar to discus but much hardier. Available in various colour forms including Red Spotted and Green. They may eat or damage soft plants.

Tank Setup

• Minimum tank size: 250 litres for one; 400+ litres for a pair

Diet

• Treats: Frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, blanched vegetables, algae wafers

Temperament & Tank Mates

• Temperament: Semi-aggressive; relatively peaceful for a large cichlid
• Best companions: Medium-large robust fish, plecos, large tetras
• Avoid: Small fish (may be eaten), very aggressive cichlids

Breeding

• Difficulty: Easy; flat spawner
• Process: Lay eggs on flat vertical surfaces; both parents guard aggressively

Common Issues

• Grows to 20–25 cm; plan tank accordingly
• Hardier than discus but similar body shape
