Overview
The Siamese Fighting Fish (Betta splendens) is one of the most iconic aquarium fish, prized for its spectacular flowing fins and vivid colouration. Males are territorial and must be kept alone or with very carefully chosen tank mates. Available in many tail types (Halfmoon, Plakat, Veiltail, Crown Tail, etc.).

Tank Setup
- Minimum tank size: 40 litres for one (20 litres absolute minimum for plakats)
- Substrate: Any; sand or fine gravel
- Decor: Planted with hiding spots; floating plants for surface cover
- Note: Labyrinth fish β breathe air; surface access essential
Diet
- Base: High-quality betta pellets (Hikari, New Life Spectrum)
- Treats: Frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia
- Frequency: 1β2 meals daily; they are prone to constipation β don't overfeed
Temperament & Tank Mates
- Temperament: Semi-aggressive; males attack each other and similar-looking fish
- Best companions: Small tetras (Neon, Ember), rasboras, corydoras, dwarf shrimp (with caution), snails
- Avoid: Other bettas (especially males), long-finned guppies, gouramis (similar body shape triggers aggression)
- Note: Males will fight to the death β never keep two males together
Breeding
- Difficulty: Moderate to difficult
- Process: Male builds bubble nest; courtship embrace; remove female after spawning
- Fry: Require infusoria or micro worms initially; free-swimming after 2β3 days
Common Issues
- Long-finned varieties are prone to fin rot β excellent water quality essential
- Prone to swim bladder disease from overfeeding
- Velvet, ich, columnaris β quarantine new additions
- Keep away from strong currents β they are weak swimmers
