Overview
The Clown Loach (Chromobotia macracanthus) is a large, long-lived, social loach prized for its orange-and-black banded body and entertaining personality. They are one of the best fish for controlling snail populations. They MUST be kept in groups and require a very large aquarium β they grow to 25β30 cm and can live 20+ years.

Tank Setup
- Minimum tank size: 650 litres for 5+ (they are social and MUST be kept in groups)
- Substrate: Sand or fine gravel (they root around in substrate)
- Decor: Driftwood, caves, hiding spots; they are active and need room
- Note: They grow VERY large β plan for 25β30 cm adults from the start
Diet
- Base: Quality sinking pellets, flake
- Treats: Frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, blanched vegetables, snails (they eat them)
- Note: They are omnivorous and appreciate variety
Temperament & Tank Mates
- Temperament: Peaceful, highly social, active
- Best companions: Large peaceful fish β larger tetras, gouramis, plecos, other large loaches
- Avoid: Small fish (may be outcompeted), very aggressive species
- Note: They are social and become stressed if kept alone β minimum group of 5
Breeding
- Difficulty: Very difficult in captivity; almost exclusively wild-caught
Common Issues
- They are jumpers β tight-fitting lid essential
- Prone to hole-in-the-head disease in poor water quality
- Slow growers but reach massive size β many are sold as juveniles and outgrow their tanks
- One of the longest-lived freshwater fish β 20+ years with excellent care
