Overview

The Zebra Danio (Brachydanio rerio) is one of the hardiest aquarium fish available — virtually indestructible. Its bold blue-and-gold striping and energetic swimming make it ideal for beginners. Available in standard, pink, and sky green trade forms.

• Temperature: 18–25°C (64–77°F); tolerates cooler water
• pH: 6.0–8.0
• Hardness: 5–20 dGH (extremely adaptable)

Tank Setup

• Minimum tank size: 90 litres for 8+
• Decor: Planted with generous open swimming space; they are active and need room
• Cover: Tight-fitting lid essential — they jump when startled

Diet

• Base: Quality flake, micro pellets
• Treats: Frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia

Temperament & Tank Mates

• Temperament: Peaceful, very active schooling fish
• Best companions: Other robust fish — tetras, barbs, gouramis, corydoras
• Avoid: Very small fish (may be outcompeted)
• Schooling: Minimum 8; they school tightly when comfortable

Breeding

• Difficulty: Very easy; they breed readily
• Process: Scatter eggs among fine plants; remove parents

Common Issues

• Extremely hardy — excellent beginner fish
• Can jump — secure lid essential
• Not suitable for nano tanks — they need swimming space
